Artists Leena Mäki-Patola and Liina Mäki-Patola focus on examining subtleness in their works. The main techniques of the works are graphics and ceramics. The atmosphere of the exhibition is quiet and focused, offering a respite from the flood of everyday stimuli. Leena Mäki-Patola graduated from the University of Art and Design in 1983. She lives and works in Varkaus. Liina Mäki-Patola, who is active in Helsinki, graduated with a Master of Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts, The University of the Arts Helsinki, in 2024.

Temporary cultural-historical exhibition
Photographer Ivar Ekström 18.9.2026–31.3.2027
Throughout his career, Ivar Ekström also worked as a photographer for A. Ahlström. Alongside his work as a forester, he took photographs while traveling to remote logging sites and documented the construction and operations of the Varkaus factories. Through his photography, Ekström captured the everyday lives of people in the Savo region during the early 20th century. The exhibition explores Ekström’s work as a photographer through his iconic images.
Art Projects
KONSTI´S ART PROJECTS
Varkaus Museum Center Konsti supports the diversity of the art scene by presenting short-term art projects by art professionals selected through an open call. The projects are closely linked to the environment of the Tehtaan koulu, with a creative emphasis on interpretations of museum collections and contents, as well as environmental and community art. Starting in 2025.
The Varkaus Art Museum in the Varkaus Museum Center Konsti is seeking annually professional artists for an art project. The project must be closely linked to the environment of the Tehtaan koulu and may creatively focus on interpretations of the Konsti's collections and contents. The focus will be on sculpture, environmental, community and site-specific art. The Konsti Museum Center in Varkaus is part of the local, industrial cultural heritage.
The portfolio call is open to professional artists and artist teams working in Finland, who must have a suitable education and/or an active and professional activity in the field of art, as well as evidence of their ability to realise a work independently and within an agreed timeframe. In the case of a working group, at least one of its members must be a professional artist. These are also selection criteria.
The selected artist or team will be paid €8 000 + VAT for the project. The amount awarded will cover all costs related to the design and production of the work, such as the cost of materials, transport of the work, subcontracted work or services, travel costs, the artist's design and supervision work, the cost of working space and the cost of tools.
There are self-catering accommodation and residency opportunities in the area.
